Evolution of LATTC
Archival Recordings 39

A couple of weeks ago while walking past the intersection of Grand and Washington I noticed that the corner has changed dramatically. They have broken ground on the new Design & Media Arts building at Los Angeles Trade Tech and began tearing down the old building that once stood. This new facility will be a massive improvement over the previous one but its demolition prompted some reflection on my part, having had so much personal history tied to the old structure.

Trade Tech has played a large part in my evolution as an artist, a role which I have previously discussed in depth in my Nonstndrd Process newsletter. A byproduct of my connection to the school was that it remained on my radar long after I had left and I returned to photograph it many times over the years. One of the best things about the old building was the view from the top floor facing northeast overlooking Downtown Los Angeles. I made several trips to take pictures from there over the course of a decade and those photographs serve as an interesting record of the Los Angeles skyline and the South Park neighborhood in general.
