The Art of Getting There

PROCSSS (pronounced "processes") by Nonstndrd Creative Projects is a newsletter on art, photography, and design published a couple of times a month by Kwasi Boyd-Bouldin (yours truly).
Who am I?
I've had a pretty wild journey as a creative professional. I've started working regularly as a photographer in 2015, freelancing for local publications like L.A. Taco and Curbed Los Angeles. My focus has always been the urban landscape and neighborhoods and at the time, there was a lot of demand for that type of work. Things REALLY took off for me in 2017 when I was named one of Time magazine's 12 African American Photographers to Follow. That accomplishment was followed by a feature in The New York Times, several projects for KCET and work on the Netflix show City of Ghosts as a background photographer. Things were going well until the pandemic happened and the bottom fell out of my freelance career.
Nonstndrd Origins
From that point, I regrouped and decided to focus on my roots as an artist and graphic designer. It wasn't the end of my photography practice, it was the beginning of its integration into my larger vision. I began designing and selling a series of photo zines called "The Public Work" that documented the Covid shut downs and landed me another feature in the Arts section of the New York Times in 2020. In 2022 I was named one of two inaugural Creators in Residence for the Los Angeles Public Library, resulting in a yearlong exhibition and two publications, including the acclaimed The Library Zine. And in 2023, I started mt Archival Recordings project to continue my mission of documenting the changing urban environment in the City of Angels. All of these elements make up the foundation of Nonstndrd Creative.
These days, I'm in the studio making work that draws on my journey and experiences. That expertise and insight are the core of the PROCSSS newsletter. I also write about the ways our society shapes my artistic pursuits and other things related to the creative hustle in 2025.
